Afgelopen 29 en 30 April 2023 verbrak ik het Guinness World Record 'Grootste afstand gerend, geblinddoekt, in 24 uur' om sponsorgeld op te halen voor het BartimeusFonds. De bijbehorende promovideo vind je door op onderstaande foto te klikken.

Wat de recordpoging betreft, deze is een opstapje naar het uiteindelijke doel: de Marathon des Sables.

In 2024 ren ik namelijk voor het Bartiméus Fonds door de Sahara. De Marathon des Sables of zandmarathon door het zuiden van Marokko. Het Bartiméus Fonds kan met dit geld het diagnostisch centrum van Bartiméus ondersteunen waar diagnose van visuele problemen bij babies en peuters heel vroegtijdig mogelijk is.

Ik weet uit eigen ervaring dat dit enorm belangrijk is. Ik heb zelf een volledig blind dochtertje van zes, Maja heet ze, die ook bij Bartiméus gediagnosticeerd is. Als je kind wordt geboren en niets of weinig ziet moet je dit emotioneel verwerken maar tegelijk gaat je hele geplande opvoeding het raam uit. Je moet je aanpassen en bij elke ontwikkelingsstap komen jij en je kind obstakels tegen die ziende kinderen heel anders ervaren.

In 2021 rende ik samen met enkele vrienden het Pieterpad, een route van 500 kilometer door Nederland in 7 dagen en haalde daarmee iets meer dan 9000 euro op. In 2024 ga ik dit groter aanpakken, omdat ik zelf ervaren heb hoe enorm veel beter het leven is voor mijn kleine meid dankzij Bartimeus. De Missie is de Marathon des Sables en het streefbedrag is 100.000. Een enorm bedrag, maar hier gaan we sowieso voor, want het doel is te belangrijk om lager op in te zetten. Ga je mee op avontuur? The 29th and 30th of April 2023 I broke the Guinness World Record 'Greatest distance run blindfolded in 24 hours' to raise money for the Bartimeus foundation (BartimeusFonds). The promovideo associated with this Record attempt can be found by clicking the picture below.

Concerning this recordattempt, it is a stepping stone towards the eventual goal, the Marathon des Sables.

Because, in 2024 I will be running the Marathon des Sables for that same BartimeusFonds. With this financial support the BartimeusFonds can support the diagnostic centre in which babies and toddlers with a visual impairment can be diagnosed at a very early stage.

I know from own experience that this is vitally important, having a daughter of six years old, by the name of Maja, who was born blind. When your child is born and turns our to be blind you have to emotionally digest this. The near future in which you planned to learn him or her to ride a bike changes, teaches the kid to eat is an obstacle, learning to walk. With every new developmental stage you encounter extra hurdles which visually capable children do not encounter. Early diagnosis is one very important step in making your child's first few years a lot easier, since you as a parent know to a much greater extend how to support your cute bundle of joy.

In 2021 me and a couple of friends ran the Dutch Pieterpad, a long distance route covering 500 kilometers from North to South. With that we raised a bit over 9000 euro's for the BartimeusFonds and this time I am stepping it up a notch or six by finishing the Marathon des Sables. The mission is to raise 100.000 euro's which is a large amount, but these young babies and toddlers deserve all the help we can get them, so I will do my best to reach that goal. Blindruns en Wereldrecords

English version below* Ten tijde van dit schrijven is de Marathon des Sables trein echt op gang gekomen. Achter de schermen werk ik met o.a. de toffe mensen van het BartimeusFonds aan hoe we zo veel mogelijk bekendheid aan onze plannen kunnen geven. Zelf ga ik komend weekend met een klein groepje vrienden bij de Dordtsche Biesbosch een geblinddoekte trailrun (dus door de bossen, en wellicht het water?!) doen. Ik heb dit plan niet zelf bedacht, dus de bedenker in kwestie, Marc, gaat net als mij geblinddoekt worden en we hebben buddy's gevonden die het allemaal niet al te serieus nemen en ons hopelijk in niet al te veel stukjes naar het einde brengen. En, geen zorgen, we willen jullie deze pret niet onthouden, dus we filmen en we posten het online. Deze actie is een opstapje naar 29 en 30 april, wanneer ik samen met een hele groep enthousiaste mensen het Guinness World Record "langste afstand gerend in 24 uur, geblinddoekt" ga verbreken. Het huidige record staat op 80-en-een-beetje km's en ik ga er proberen 200km van te maken. Niet doorvertellen nog, mijn doel, maar hoge doelen stellen is belangrijk. Hopelijk krijgen we hiermee nog meer aandacht zodat we na de zomervakantie een volgende stap in onze campagne kunnen zetten. Die blijft nog even geheim. En: tot slot, het meesterstuk, de Marathon des Sables, 250km door de Sahara met rugzak in 7 dagen, eind april 2024! Dit alles met het doel om minstens 100.000 euro binnen te halen voor het BartimeusFonds waarmee vroege diagnose voor visueel beperkte kindjes verbetert, versneld en geboden kan worden. Dit is namelijk iets waar ik uit eigen ervaring van weet dat het alle verschil maakt tussen een goede start en een moedeloze start. Dat geldt zowel voor het kind als voor de ouders. Wordt vervolgd...   English version* While I am writing this our Marathon des Sables train has really started gaining momentum. Behind the curtains I am working with the lovely people of the BartimeusFonds to try and gain as much exposure for our plans as possible. For me, this coming weekend, I am going to run blindfolded, through the nature area near the Dordtsche Biesbosch. The friend who came up with this plan, Marc, won't be spared either. He will also be joining, blindfolded while some of our other friends who tend to take things 'not too serious' will guide us through the area, and perhaps in the water?! Since we don't want to keep all this fun from you, we will be recording it and posting it online soon. This fun-activity is a stepping stone towards a bigger one, the Guinness World Record attempt on April the 29th and 30th, where I will be breaking the record for "Longest blindfolded distance run, in 24 hours". The current record is set at 80-and-something km's and I intend to finish at 200km. Don't tell anybody about this goal yet, since it's a pretty big one, but I believe we have to set our targets far away, since it is worth the effort. Somewhere in September or October we plan to roll out the next step in our masterplan, but what that will be? For now this will remain a secret, but I will tell you as soon as possible. And finally, the masterpiece, the Marathon des Sables itself, 250km through the Sahara with a backpack in 7 days. This will be the end of april 2024. All of this is done to try and raise at least 100.000 euro's for the diagnosis of visually impaired children. I know from firsthand experience that it can make all the difference to have a fast and accurate diagnosis. It makes a huge difference for the child but also for the parents. To be continued...
